Knowing and understanding

Part of the methodological material that came together in Learnis originates in work developed over several years by CNR-IRPI researchers together with the SaperCapire team, a multidisciplinary group. The work concentrated on comprehension, learning and the handling of concepts — specifically on the cognitive steps that carry a person from having been exposed to something to actually understanding it. It began from an observation that is easy to make and uncomfortable to accept: people often cannot use, with any precision, concepts they are certain they already know.

The Fondamentali dell'Apprendimento

From that work come the Fondamentali dell'Apprendimento: exercises in applied metacognition aimed at a small number of operations that comprehension depends on. Their purpose is to make the process of understanding observable and checkable — to separate being familiar with a term from having command of the concept behind it. The distinction sounds academic until you watch someone try to explain something they were sure they knew.

Where they are used today

The Fondamentali are now an integral part of LEARNIS Mind, the Learnis path dedicated to learning skills and to building a study method that belongs to the person using it. Learnis holds a licence to use the material and to train its own trainers on it: our instructors were trained by the team that developed it before being authorised to teach any of it.

The operations the exercises work on

  • Defining a concept precisely.
  • Identifying the elements it is made of.
  • Placing it inside broader categories.
  • Recognising it through concrete examples.
  • Looking at it from different perspectives.
  • Restating it in one's own words.
